PELVIC FLOOR PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR MEN

Pelvic floor physical therapy is an effective and evidence-based treatment for various conditions that can affect the male pelvic floor. Everyone has a pelvic floor, and often people assume pelvic floor therapy is only for women. The truth is, men struggle to find providers that are skilled and willing to help them with these debilitating and embarrassing conditions. These conditions can impact the quality of life and affect our most important bodily functions. At Movement Physio and Wellness, we are here to support and guide you through our treatment plans that are specific to male pelvic floor issues. Our goal is to make sure you get back to doing the things you love like lifting, running, biking, and working out without having to worry about your pelvic floor!

Benefits of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

  1. Improved Bladder Control: Pelvic floor exercises can help improve bladder control and reduce symptoms of urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency.

  2. Pain Management: Pelvic pain can show up in a variety of ways. We can evaluate you from a whole body perspective to truly figure out what is going on.

  3. Easier Bowel Movements: We help release tight pelvic floor muscles that are often the result of chronic constipation.

  4. Enhanced Sexual Function: Strengthening the pelvic floor can lead to improved erectile function and increase blood flow to the pelvis.

  5. Post-Surgical Recovery: Pelvic floor therapy can aid recovery after surgeries such as prostatectomy or hernia repair.

  6. Core Stability: Strong pelvic floor muscles are the foundation to your core and contribute to overall strength, which can enhance athletic performance and prevent injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pelvic floor physical therapy is a speciality physical therapy that is perfect for people who are struggling with conditions related to the pelvis or pelvic floor. Some of these common issues have to do with bladder leakage, bowel issues, or sexual dysfunction related to the muscles of the pelvic floor. We work on eliminating pain, stopping these embarrassing symptoms, and getting you back to activities and goals specific to you.

  • At Movement Physio and Wellness, we help adults struggling with bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction. We treat men dealing with pelvic floor problems like pelvic pain, testicular or penile pain, urinary urgency, urinary retention, and constipation. Often we treat men who are dealing with prostate cancer or prostatitis and require pelvic floor therapy after their prostate surgery. When you come in for a physical therapy evaluation, we look at how you move in all areas of your body but especially your back, hips, and pelvis. We examine strength in your back, gluts, core and legs and test these muscles for pain or tightness. With your permission and in order to get the best examination of the pelvic floor, we do internal rectal exams of the pelvic floor muscles. We are feeling for pain, tension, and/or weakness of the pelvic floor, and then we can create the best treatment plan for you so you can reach your goals!

  • The people that come to see us for pelvic floor therapy are often dealing with an issue related to the muscles of the pelvic floor that hasn’t gone away on its own. Your doctor may refer you to pelvic floor therapy, and you can also seek out your own pelvic floor therapist and start treatment right away without a doctor referral. Most often, men with pelvic floor problems struggle with difficulty emptying their bladder, urgency to pee, bladder leakage, constipation, erectile dysfunction, pelvic pain, testicular or penile pain, and hip/back pain. You can take this short 10 question quiz HERE to see if you’d be a good candidate to come in for therapy!

  • We are an out-of-network provider, which allows us to provide the highest level of one-on-one care without insurance restrictions. This means longer treatment sessions, a personalized plan designed just for you, and faster results. Many of our patients use HSA/FSA funds or submit for reimbursement through their insurance. We'd be happy to guide you through that process.

  • No! Colorado is a “Direct Access” state for physical therapy, meaning you typically do not need a referral to see a physical therapist or occupational therapist. Even if your doctor recommends a specific clinic for you, it is in your right to choose the clinic that fits your needs the best!

  • Prior to your first visit, please fill out your intake form that is emailed to you via our Jane booking system. At your first visit, you can expect to be evaluated and treated in a private room by one of our female pelvic health therapists. We look at how the body moves, especially your hips, back, core, and anything that has to do with your specific pelvic condition. With your consent, the therapists may ask to perform an internal rectal exam to check if the pelvic floor muscles are tight, weak, or painful. If you’re not yet ready for this, no worries! Then, we come up with an expert treatment plan in order to meet your specific goals. The first visit is all about learning who you are and how these pelvic floor issues are affecting your life. We want you to feel reassured that we are experts in pelvic floor treatment and you are in the right place!

  • Please wear athletic wear or workout clothes to your appointments. We want to make sure you are comfortable moving around. We might have you bend, squat, jump, and lift to see how these movements are affecting your pelvic floor symptoms.

  • Movement Physio and Wellnesss is located near the intersection of 64th and Indiana in West Arvada, right in between Comfort Dental and Qdoba. There is ample parking in front of the building.

  • We find a huge benefit in being able to start men on a pelvic floor strengthening program prior to having a prostate surgery. The stronger we can get your pelvic floor and the muscles around your pelvis before surgery, typically you will have an easier recovery and stop leaking urine faster than someone who didn’t do PT prior to prostate surgery.

  • The decision to perform an internal rectal exam is made by YOU, the patient, and your pelvic floor therapist together. We always ask for consent to perform a rectal exam and treatment each time it is done. During the rectal exam, we are assessing the different layers of the pelvic floor muscles to look for tightness, weakness, and/or pain. The internal rectal exam gives us a lot of good information on how to treat your pelvic floor the best. If you are not quite ready, thats ok, we can assess the pelvic floor in other ways too.
